Always pack your prescription medication and valuables in the hand luggage

First and foremost, we want to emphasize the importance of packing all your necessary medications in your hand luggage when traveling to Europe. If you have prescription medication, it is crucial to keep it with you in your hand luggage. In the unfortunate event that the airline misplaces your checked-in luggage, having your medication with you will prevent any difficulties in obtaining it in Europe.

If, for any reason, you find yourself without your prescription medication, there are a few options available to you. You can make an appointment to visit a doctor or hospital, or you can request a doctor to come onboard the ship to assist you. However, it’s important to note that these services may come at a cost, which can be up to 500 euros depending on the country or city you are in. Please keep in mind that in most ports, it may not be possible to arrange a doctor’s visit onboard, and you may need to visit a local hospital instead. It’s also worth mentioning that medications in Europe may differ from those in your home country, so using a prescription from your home doctor may not be possible. It’s always best to be prepared and have your necessary medications with you to avoid any complications during your trip.

Your health and well-being are our top priority, so please take these precautions seriously and ensure that you have all your medications readily available in your hand luggage. We want to make sure your journey is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Laundry services onboard

While laundry services are available on the ships, it’s important to note that they can be quite expensive. Unlike ocean liners, most river cruise ships do not have self-service laundry facilities. Additionally, finding public laundries in the ports you’ll be visiting in Europe is not very common. You can avoid the high costs of ship laundry services and the hassle of searching for laundromats in the ports if you bring some small washing detergent packs and wash some of the smaller items in your bathroom. You can also buy the items from local shops, it will be cheaper than using the onboard service.

By taking these simple steps, you can save some money and make the most of your time exploring Europe without worrying about laundry.

Tax returns

If you’re planning on doing some shopping during your European adventure, it’s worth considering claiming a VAT Tax return. VAT, or Value Added Tax, is the tax you pay on goods purchased in a European Union country. However, if you’re traveling back to a country outside of the European Union, you may be eligible to claim a refund on those taxes, all those purchases can really add up at the end of your trip and you can save good money!

To claim your VAT Tax refund, you’ll need to do so at the last airport or border where you’re leaving the European Union. For example, if you disembark the ship in Budapest and then fly to Amsterdam for your connecting flight, you’ll need to fill out the tax refund form in Amsterdam. It’s important to keep all your original receipts from the shops where you made your purchases and ask for a tax refund form at the time of purchase. Without these receipts and the completed form, your claim will not be valid, and you may lose out on that money.

If you have any further information about VAT Tax refund process and don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help make your shopping experience in Europe as smooth and rewarding as possible!

Booking rooms with a balcony

When considering a stateroom with a balcony, it’s important to keep in mind the possibility of double docking with another ship. This occurrence is becoming more common in the river cruise industry as companies continue to expand their fleets. Inevitably, you may find yourself docked alongside another ship in most European ports, which means limited access to your balcony during these times. However, don’t let this deter you from choosing a balcony room. While sailing, having a balcony provides a wonderful opportunity to relax and take in the scenic views. Whether you prefer to unwind on the balcony or simply open the curtains and enjoy the sights from your bed, the choice is yours.

If the balcony is not available during port stops, you can always head to the sundeck for a full view of the surroundings. Ultimately, the decision depends on your personal preferences.

The River Cruise Ships docks very close to the shore, sometimes right next to pedestrians walking paths. Always make sure to lock the balcony doors when the ship is docked and close your curtains during the night, you know why!

Transfers

Most cruise companies provide a free transfer to the ship or airport as part of their package. However, sometimes this transfer may be an additional option that comes with a high cost. In these cases, it’s often more affordable to use taxis or public transportation, which are easily accessible at the embarkation and disembarkation ports.

When using taxis for your transfers, it’s important to be cautious and aware of potential scams. Some taxi drivers may try to overcharge you by quoting a higher price or refusing to use the meter. To avoid this, always use official taxis and insist on using the meter. If a driver refuses, it’s best to find another taxi.

We have organised many transfers over the years and can help you find the best and most cost-effective option.

Pre-book excursions, Beverage Packages or Gratuities

We recommend that you pre book excursions and different packages before you come onboard as the prices back home might be lower and you can save some money. For example, if you book several Optional Excursions, the Beverage Package and Gratuities Package(if applicable) and all together costs 1000$ per person(it can add up to be a lot more than that), you will find that once onboard, you will have to pay this amount in Euros, as that is the onboard currency. With todays rate, purchasing all these items onboard will cost you approx. 1100$,if paid in Euros, so you will save 200$ if you pre-book everything home.

This suggestion might not apply for all companies on the river but keep this in mind when booking your cruise and ask for more details about pre-booking versus booking onboard.

Getting ready for a cruise can be a thrilling experience, starting from the initial idea all the way to confirming the booking. There are numerous aspects to consider, so let’s explore them together!

Selecting the cruise: Conduct thorough research on various cruise lines and itineraries, to discover the most suitable option based on your preferences and budget. Take into account factors like the duration of the cruise, the destination, available onboard activities and amenities. Additionally, consider the time of the year you plan to travel, as water levels in the river can significantly influence your experience. These levels may be either too low or too high, depending on the season and possibly leading to alterations in the planned ship routes or even interruptions. Check our our post about ,,When is the best time time of the year to book a River Cruise in Europe.´´

Book your cruise: To reserve your cruise, simply make a booking for your chosen trip. You have two options for doing so: you can either book directly through the cruise line’s website or seek assistance from a travel agent. You might receive some special offers so make sure you check both options.

Check passport and visa requirements: Ensure that you have a valid passport and any necessary visas to travel to your cruise destination. Renew your passport if it is close to expiration. Some countries also require a visa, according to your nationality, so check the specific requirements for your destination. Find out more about border controls here: ,,Travelling to Eastern Europe on a Cruise Ship?´´

Pack appropriately: Pack clothes suitable for the cruise itinerary and destination. We prepared more information in this post: ,,What are the essential items to pack for a river cruise ship journey?´´ Check the weather forecast for your travel dates. Don’t forget essentials like swimwear(if you are planning to visit the thermal baths in Budapest), comfortable walking shoes, formal attire (if necessary for formal nights), toiletries, and any necessary medications, and please…always keep your medication in the carry-on luggage. There were many cases where we had to deal with lost luggage cases and the important medication together with it. Read more about it in our post ,,Lost luggage? A nightmare during your River Cruise!´´ and ,,Medical related information about your River Cruise Ship!´´

Research onboard activities: Research the amenities and activities offered onboard the cruise ship. Make a note of any reservations or activities that need to be booked in advance. This can include spa treatments, specialty dining, or shore excursions. You might want to read our post about ,,River Cruise Ship Amenities´´.

Organize travel documents: Keep all necessary travel documents together, including your passport, cruise confirmation, boarding passes, travel insurance information, and any other relevant documents. It’s a good idea to make copies of these documents and pack them separately in case of loss or theft.

Pre-book transportation and accommodations: If you need to travel to the departure port or arrive a day early, arrange transportation and accommodations in advance. Research options such as hotels near the port or shuttle services to ensure a smooth start to your cruise. Contact us if you need any assistance with this, we have extensive experience in booking and arranging hotels and transfers.

Purchase travel insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance from the cruise company or a 3rd party insurance to protect your investment in case of unforeseen events, such as trip cancellation, lost luggage, or medical emergencies.

Review cruise line policies: Familiarize yourself with the cruise line’s policies regarding tipping, dress codes, onboard rules, and any additional fees or services. This will help you avoid any surprises during your trip.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you are well-prepared for your cruise and have a smooth and enjoyable vacation experience. We are here to help if you need any assistance, Contact us!

Our team of experts collaborated to compile a selection of items that you may find useful when getting ready for your cruise and during your cruise. As an Amazon Associate, we earn a small commission from qualifying purchases, allowing us to continue our mission of providing valuable information to you. Thank you!

Reusable water bottles.

To promote environmental preservation, opt for a reusable water bottle instead of consuming large quantities of plastic ones during your travels. It is alarming how cruise ships worldwide are using millions of plastic water bottles daily, possibly even hourly. Let’s work together to alter this trend. Considering that most cruise ships lack facilities for guests to wash their reusable bottles, we suggest investing in a UV self-cleaning water bottle. This innovative product not only eliminates germs that could develop inside the bottle but also purifies water from public sources when refilling. LARQ company has by far the best products out there and they have some great water purifiers for your household as well. Have a look on our recommendations below!

Luggage Trolleys

When you travel long distances, consisting of multiple flights and car transfers, your suitcases are handled by many different people and moved around, and we all know how that is being done…this often results in damaged or scratched suitcases. We have seen many cases where the suitcases were broken or had missing wheels. In fact, we had to buy new suitcases for our guests on the ship more often that you think. If you are a frequent traveler, it’s important to invest in a high-quality trolley. There are loads of different options on the market, we recommend you to purchase the ones without zipper and with an aluminium frames, here are a few options:

Tracking devices for your suitcases

You can find several tracking devices on the market which you can place inside of your suitcases and track them all along the way. We dealt with many missing or lost suitcases and having a device like this was a big help as we could locate them very easily. Not only when the luggage were lost by the airline company, but also when the suitcases were left behind in hotels or when they were misplaced Somewhere on the ship. We immediately knew where they were and could take action accordingly. There are several products on the market but they have a short range of action. AirTags are the best choice by far! An AirTag can technically be detected anywhere in the world, as long as there are other Apple devices around it. You can also use them for different reasons, there are wallets or passport covers where you can attach an AirTag and in case you lose it, you will alway be able to locate it. After your trip, you can attach one to your keychain or they can be also used to track your pets while you take them out for a walk and they tend to disappear fast, chasing squirrels! We recommend the following:

Travel converters and adapters

The staterooms on the river cruise ships are usually equipped with 110 V and 220 V plugs for you to use, some of the more modern ones even have USB plugs, however, if you are also planning to stay in hotels before or after your trip, you will find that not all of them will have this option. As many of us have plenty electronic devices to charge in the same time, be prepared and take with you a travel converter or adapter. Here are a few options:

Portable power banks

You will be most of the times outdoors, either on excursions, visiting historic landmarks, visiting the ports of call on your own, or admiring the scenery on the sundeck while you cruising. You might consider having a power bank for your devices so that you will not miss on capturing important moments from your trip. Here are a few portable power bank suggestions:

Theft safe backpacks and accessories

When exploring the crowded cities, always keep your valuables safe, you would be surprised how many cases of theft we witnessed throughout the years. Always be prepared and do not keep the valuable items where others can easily access. Do not take a large amount of cash with you and if you need to carry the passport while ashore, make sure you place it in a safe place! Here are a few solutions:

When going on a river cruise ship, it’s important to pack the necessary items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Here are some essential things to bring:

Prescription Medication: If you’re currently on medication, it’s important to ensure you have enough for the entire duration of your trip. Remember to pack it in your hand luggage, as the medication available in Europe may differ from what you’re used to. In case you need more medication during your trip, you’ll have to consult a doctor and it may come at an additional cost. For more information, contact us.

Travel Documents: Before booking or embarking on your River Cruise, double-check the validity of your passport for the entire duration of your planned trip. It’s also advisable to consider purchasing travel insurance, either through the cruise company or a third party. Make copies of your travel documents and store them separately in case the originals get lost.

Appropriate Clothing: Keep an eye on the weather conditions in the specific European region you’ll be visiting. Summers can be scorching hot, while winters can be bitterly cold. Ensure you pack the right selection of clothes and shoes, especially if rain is expected. Most river cruise companies don’t enforce a dress code for dinner, but it’s worth bringing a formal outfit for the final dinner onboard or if you plan on attending operas or classical concerts.

Electronics: Don’t forget to pack any necessary electronics along with their charging cables. If you rely on multiple devices, consider bringing a power strip, converter, or adapter. While the ships are equipped with 110v and 220v plugs, many hotels in Europe may not offer the same convenience if you plan on extending your stay. Check out our recommended options here.

Travel Accessories: Prepare a small backpack or tote bag for carrying personal items during shore excursions. Additionally, bring a refillable water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat. Take a look at our recommendations for these items.

Entertainment: Bring along books, magazines, or an e-reader to keep yourself entertained during leisure time onboard. Some river cruise ships even have libraries where you can find books or board games for you to use.

Money and Credit Cards: Ensure you have enough cash or local currency for small expenses like tips or purchases from local vendors during port visits. Additionally, carry credit/debit cards for larger expenses and emergencies. However, it’s very important to inform your bank about your travel plans in advance to avoid any payment issues. Learn more about this topic here.

Miscellaneous: Include any other items that suit your personal preferences, such as a travel pillow, earplugs, a sleep mask, a daypack, a small flashlight, and a waterproof bag to protect your gadgets during excursions. Have a look at our recommendations.

River cruise ships offer a range of amenities to enhance the passenger experience, although they are limited compared to larger ocean-going ships due to space constraints.

The main restaurant is where all meals are typically served, and some ships even have a terrace for enjoying meals with stunning views on sunny days. Alternatively, meals may also be served in the lounges for a more intimate setting.

The lounge/bar is a versatile space used for daily meetings and briefings. Passengers can relax with a drink, read a book, or enjoy live music and entertainment in the evenings. Quizzes, games, and lectures are also organized here.

Spa and fitness centers are not as common on river cruise ships. While a few ships may have a beauty salon, spa, or sauna, it’s important to check with the cruise company if these amenities are available on the specific cruise you’ll be traveling on. However, if you desire spa services, the reception can help arrange appointments for massages, hair, or nail treatments ashore.

Swimming pools and jacuzzis are also limited on river cruise ships. Only a few ships have these amenities, so it’s best to inquire with the cruise company if they are available on the ship you’ll be sailing on.

Choosing the perfect stateroom category for your river cruise can feel like a big decision. Different cruise companies offer various options to cater to your preferences and needs. While regular staterooms on river cruise ships may appear small, they are surprisingly practical. Every inch is thoughtfully designed to provide you with the space you need in a comfortable manner.

River cruise ships typically have three decks where guest staterooms are located.

On the First or Lower Deck, you’ll find Staterooms with small windows. These windows cannot be opened as they are just above the water level, and the cabin is partially submerged. These Staterooms are usually the most affordable option while still offering great comfort.

The Second or Middle Deck features staterooms with either Balcony or a French veranda/window. The balcony is equipped with a small table and two chairs, allowing you to enjoy the scenic views outside your stateroom. The French veranda on the other hand, has a large window which can be opened on one side, allowing fresh air to flow in while you relax on the bed with the curtains open. As the ships dock quite close to the shore, it’s important to lock your balcony doors and close the curtains in the evenings for privacy.

The third or upper deck may also have staterooms with French Veranda/Window or Regular Balconies, and this is where you’ll often find Suite Staterooms. Suites can vary in offerings, ranging from two-room suites with a living room and bedroom to Owner Suites located at the back of the ship. These suites and staterooms on the third deck are the most luxurious and spacious, offering enhanced accommodations and interior design.

Regardless of your choice, you can expect comfort and accommodation on a river cruise ship. Take a look at the different category types offered by the cruise company and select the one that best suits your needs and expectations.

While modern ships have made significant improvements in design and technology, you may still experience vibrations caused by the engine. This can depend on the sailing area and weather conditions. Consider bringing a pair of earplugs to cancel out any extra noise.

It’s worth noting that guests typically don’t spend much time in their rooms, regardless of the category chosen. Most feedback from our guests indicates that they primarily use their rooms for sleeping and showering, while the rest of their time is spent exploring cities or enjoying the ship’s facilities.

If you decide to book a room with a balcony, keep in mind the possibility of double docking with another ship. This is becoming more common in the river cruise industry as companies build more ships. In many European ports, it’s inevitable that you’ll dock alongside another ship, which may limit your access to the balcony. However, having a balcony while sailing allows you to relax and enjoy the scenic views or simply unwind in bed with the curtains open. Alternatively, you can always head to the sundeck for a full view.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to assist you in making the best decision for your river cruise experience!

The day has finally arrived for your exciting journey to begin! We recommend arriving in the city where your cruise departs a day or two early, this will give you extra time to explore the city and adjust to any jetlag. You can arrange a transfer to the ship through your hotel or use a service like Uber, if available. Public transportation can be challenging if you have a lot of luggage, so we suggest avoiding that hassle.

Getting to the city center from most European airports is usually straightforward. If the airport is not too far from the city, you can consider taking a taxi or Uber straight to the ship. Let us know which city you’re embarking from, and we’ll provide you with the best transportation options. In some places, taxis may try to overcharge you, so be cautious and insist on using the meter. If they refuse, find a different taxi.

If you’re traveling on your own, whether from a hotel or the airport, always check the exact location where the ship is docked before boarding. In cities like Amsterdam or Budapest, there are often multiple docking locations with many ships. The port authorities decide where the ships will dock based on river traffic, and the ships are only informed a few days or even hours in advance.

If your transfer is included, look for representatives from the cruise company at the airport. They will be easily recognizable in their company uniforms or holding lollipops. They will guide you to the transfer coach and provide any necessary information. Keep in mind that you may have to wait for other guests before departing, so it’s a good idea to grab a snack and use the restroom before leaving the airport. Rest assured, the wait won’t be too long.

When you arrive at the ship, have your passport ready and proceed to check-in at the reception. If you arrive early, your stateroom may not be ready yet as the previous guests have just finished their cruise. While the housekeeping team prepares your room, feel free to explore the ship and make use of its facilities. It will be your home for the next few days.

Welcome aboard!

We hope you find this information helpful. If you have any questions about embarking the ship in different cities, please leave a comment or contact us. We’re here to share our knowledge and assist you!

As your cruise comes to an end, it’s time to start thinking about packing and preparing for your departure. Typically, a day or two before the end of the cruise, there will be a meeting to provide you with all the necessary information about disembarking the ship.

On the morning of disembarkation day, you will need to vacate your stateroom early, to allow the housekeeping department to prepare the room for the next set of guests which are arriving in the afternoon. However, you are welcome to continue using the ship’s facilities until your departure time.

If you have a transfer included in your package, you are all set. You will be informed about your departure time and may be provided with luggage tags of different colors, indicating your departure group. The onboard team will assist with transferring your luggage from the ship to the car or coach. Before departing, always double-check that all your suitcases have been transferred to the transport vehicle to avoid leaving anything behind. At the airport, you will find airport representatives who will assist you with directions and check-in procedures for your flights.

If you are traveling on your own, you can ask the onboard reception team for assistance. They will be able to help you organize taxis or transfers to your desired destination. Same as us, the onboard reception team will have contacts with different transfer companies, ensuring that you are well taken care of and safe.

We wish you safe travels back home!

Avoid unexpected charges on your phone bill while traveling on a river cruise by following these simple tips. We’ve heard countless stories from our guests who were shocked to find hefty charges for using their phones on roaming while indulging in social media and online videos. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you navigate this issue.

First and foremost, contact your mobile provider before your trip to Europe and inquire about any special plans they may have for international travel. Many providers offer affordable packages that include mobile data, calling, and messaging outside your home country for a limited period. These plans are often cost-effective and can save you from unexpected expenses.

If you find that the offered plan doesn’t suit your needs or budget, there’s another simple solution to avoid excessive charges. Keep your phone on Airplane mode throughout your cruise and connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi instead. This way, you can still stay connected and enjoy the convenience of online services without worrying about racking up a hefty bill. Trust us, this small adjustment can save you a significant amount of money.

By taking these precautions and being mindful of your phone usage, you can enjoy your river cruise without any unexpected financial surprises.

When it comes to payment options on your river cruise, it’s important to be prepared with both cash and credit cards. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

We recommend bringing some cash with you onboard, preferably in small bills. This will come in handy for tipping guides, bus drivers, and the ship’s crew. Most companies may not be able to charge your credit card and provide cash in exchange, so it’s best to have cash on hand.

Typically, you won’t need to worry about paying anything upfront on the ship. All expenses will be charged to your onboard account, and you will settle the final amount on your last evening onboard. Most companies will require you to register a credit card during the first few days of your cruise, and this information will be used for the final settlement and to send you the final invoice. The onboard currency is usually Euros, as you are sailing in Europe, but some companies may have a different system.

Before you embark on your journey, don’t forget to inform your bank that you will be traveling. This will prevent any potential issues with your credit card being blocked due to suspected fraudulent activity. You will also need your credit card for purchases and to use in various shops during your trip. To add an extra layer of security, consider ordering a new prepaid debit card solely for this purpose. Options like Revolut or Cashapp allow you to easily create an account and transfer funds from your bank account, as well as create virtual cards for added security.

It’s important to be cautious when using your credit card, even in trustworthy places or ATMs. There have been cases of credit card information being stolen, resulting in fraudulent transactions. If this happens to you, contact your bank immediately. When using ATMs to withdraw money, look for the official ones located in buildings with recognized banks. Keep in mind that in Eastern Europe, different countries have different currencies, and you may need to exchange some local money. In smaller places, credit cards may not be widely accepted, especially by street vendors and small local businesses, so having cash is preferred.

If you are traveling in Eastern Europe, let us know, and we can provide you with information on the currencies used in each country and the best ATMs for withdrawing money. Being prepared with the right payment options will ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience during your river cruise.

While most river cruise ships do not have a doctor onboard, rest assured that the crew members are extensively trained in First Aid and will react quickly in case of an emergency.

It is important to pack all your medication in your carry on luggage and ensure that you have enough to cover the entire duration of your trip. As most of the ships do not have a medical facility or a doctor, you will not find any medication onboard. If you require over-the-counter medication, you can purchase it from local pharmacies. However, if you need prescription medication, you will need to see a doctor ashore or visit a hospital. In some ports, you may be able to call a doctor onboard, but please note that there may be a fee of up to 500 € for their services. The doctor can provide you with a prescription, and you can obtain the medication from local pharmacies. It is important to keep in mind that medication in Europe may differ from what is available in your home country, and even with a prescription from your home doctor, it may not be valid in most cases.

The ships are equipped with First Aid Kits and Automated External Defibrillators (AED), and the crew is trained to operate them. However, there are certain items that are not part of the standard First Aid Kit, such as specific antibiotic creams or wound patches. You can refer to our Travel Accessories page for a list of items that have been frequently requested by guests throughout the years, you might want to bring some with you onboard.

We have dealt with numerous emergencies onboard and have provided guests with the best possible care based on our First Aid training. In some cases, we have had to seek professional assistance and call paramedics. We have accompanied guests to hospitals to ensure they receive proper care, and in cases where there were language barriers, we have provided translation assistance, especially in Eastern Europe. One of the most challenging situations for us has been when the ship was sailing and an ambulance had to reach us in remote locations. However, we have always found a solution and accompanied guests to hospitals or clinics in nearby villages in Germany in the middle of the night, where professional help was available. We have maintained constant communication with the Captain to determine the best place for us to return to the ship, even in remote locations. We have many stories to share, some of which are also sad, but we have always done our best to assist in any way necessary. This is why we can now share this knowledge and ensure that you are well-informed and prepared for your journey.

Your health and safety are our top priorities, and we are here to answer any questions you may have on this topic. Safe travels!

If you plan on sailing through Eastern Europe, specifically Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, or Romania, there are a few important things we want to bring to your attention:

Passport Check and Border Crossings:
Not all Eastern European countries are part of the Schengen agreement, which allows for seamless travel between countries without passport checks. If your cruise itinerary includes any of the mentioned countries, you will need to hand over your passport to the onboard team. They will handle all the necessary formalities and documentation required by the local authorities. Your passport will be sent to the border police in each country to be stamped and scanned, resulting in a collection of unique stamps in your passport. The onboard team will retain possession of your passport throughout the journey as they repeat this process at every border crossing. It’s important to remember that Serbia is a non-EU country, so you must keep your passport with you while on land. The onboard team will provide you with timely information and explain the procedures. To ensure the safety of your passport, we recommend considering the purchase of an anti-theft neck wallet from our recommended Travel Accessories page. Losing your passport can be a hassle, as it may require disembarking the ship and dealing with the Embassy from there. So, keep your passport safe and secure, especially in tourist areas where pickpocketing is frequent.

Currency and Payment:
Most countries in Eastern Europe have their own currency, so it might be beneficial to exchange some money into the local currency. While souvenir shops and street vendors often accept dollars or euros due to their reliance on tourism, supermarkets and restaurants typically prefer payment in the local currency. However, credit cards are widely accepted in these establishments. Always inform yourself of the current exchange rates, so that you are not overcharged if you decide to pay in your preferred currency. For more information on using cash and credit cards, please refer to our dedicated page.

Experience the Charm:
Eastern Europe is a captivating region with a rich history, friendly and welcoming people, and mouthwatering cuisine. As you sail through the most beautiful part of the Lower Danube, you’ll witness the breathtaking beauty of the Iron Gorge or Kazan Stretch, pass through the biggest lock, the ,,Iron Gates 1´´ and hear fascinating stories about the area’s past. When sailing between Serbia and Romania, it’s important to note that you will be crossing two different time zones throughout the day. If your phone is set to “automatic time change”, it will constantly adjust the time, which can be confusing and potentially cause you to miss out on onboard activities. To avoid any inconvenience, we recommend deactivating the automatic time change option in your phone settings. Instead, manually set your phone’s time to match the local time on the ship. This way, you can ensure that you stay on schedule and don’t miss any of the exciting activities planned for your day onboard.

We have extensive experience navigating this region and are here to provide you with all the information you need. Feel free to contact us if you’d like to learn more. We’re dedicated to ensuring your journey is as enjoyable and seamless as possible!

We understand that lost luggage can be a nightmare for anyone going on vacation. To help you prepare and minimize the risk of losing your belongings, here are some important tips to consider when packing and preparing for your flights.

When traveling long distances with multiple flights, lost luggage cases have become more common due to the lack of personnel in airports. To safeguard your valuable items such as jewelry, watches, and medication, it is advisable to pack them in your carry-on luggage along with a change or two of clothes.

It’s important to note that the cruise company is not responsible for lost luggage. The sole responsibility lies with the airline, even if you booked your flights through the cruise agency or cruise company. However, the onboard team will assist you in tracking your lost luggage and provide updates on the future ports where it can be delivered. Please be aware that this can be a challenging operation, especially if the ship is moving between ports and the airport is far away. In such cases, the delivery address will be updated to your home address, and you can file a claim with the airline or travel insurance to seek reimbursement for any items you had to purchase during the time your luggage was missing. Remember to keep all the receipts, they will be useful on a later stage and as each airline has different terms and conditions, please refer to the airline’s official website for more information in a situation like this.

Some of our guests have found great success in using Airtags to track their checked-in luggage. By placing these devices in their suitcases, they were able to constantly monitor the location of their missing luggage and provide us with updates. This allowed us to make informed decisions regarding the delivery of their suitcases. While there may be other tracking devices available, we highly recommend Airtags due to their exceptional capabilities in locating suitcases anywhere in the world. If you’re interested in purchasing Airtags, please visit our Travel Accessories page and place an order today!

Some cruise companies may offer complementary laundry services and various amenities in an unfortunate event like this. We sincerely hope that you never have to deal with such a situation!

We believe that sharing all the information on this page will help you be more prepared if a challenge like this might arise. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to assist you!

One of the great perks of river cruises is the complimentary onboard wifi that most cruise companies offer. It’s wonderful to have access to the internet throughout your journey without having to worry about additional charges. However, it’s important to note that the internet speed onboard may not be as fast as what you’re accustomed to at home. Several factors can influence the speed and reliability of the onboard wifi.

Firstly, weather conditions can have an impact on the internet connection. If you’re sailing through an area with poor weather, such as heavy rain or storms, it may affect the signal strength and cause intermittent disruptions. The area where the ship is sailing through can also affect the internet speed. In more remote or rural areas, the availability of high-speed internet infrastructure may be limited. This can result in slower internet speeds. However, as the ship navigates closer to larger cities or urban areas, the internet speed tends to improve significantly. Another factor that can impact the internet speed is the ship passing under bridges which will cause occasional dropouts. While cruise companies strive to provide a stable connection, it’s important to be understanding and patient during such circumstances.

Lastly, the number of guests using their devices simultaneously can also impact the internet speed. During peak usage times, such as in the evenings when guests are sharing their experiences on social media or checking emails, the network may experience congestion. It’s advisable to plan your internet usage accordingly and try to access the wifi during off-peak hours for a smoother experience. If you need to send large files, such as pictures or videos, to your loved ones, it’s recommended to wait until the ship is docked in a larger city. In these areas, the internet infrastructure is typically more robust, resulting in faster and more reliable internet speeds. This will ensure that your files are sent promptly and without any issues.

While the onboard wifi may not match the speed of your home internet, it still provides a convenient way to stay connected and share your experiences with friends and family. Remember to be patient and understanding of any limitations, as the cruise company strives to provide the best possible internet service given the circumstances.

The cruising season in Europe usually starts in March and ends at the end of December or beginning of January. In the future, cruise companies are planning to sail all year round, looking at different options for guests to visit, despite the cold weather in the winter season, and trust us, it can get really cold!

There are plenty Museums to visit in Vienna or who wouldn’t enjoy a hot thermal bath in Budapest, while snow is slowly falling, touching your face…we definitely would!

When you go on a river cruise in Europe, each season brings its own special magic. Let’s take a closer look at the different seasons and what makes each of them so amazing.

Spring

Spring is a time of new beginnings. The European landscape comes alive with bursts of color. Imagine sailing along the rivers, surrounded by beautiful flowers and lush greenery. The air feels fresh and cool, with chill mornings but weather will warm up slowly as the sun goes up. It’s the perfect time to explore the ship’s open decks and take in the stunning views while sailing. You’ll pass by charming towns and villages, where colourful tulips and cherry blossoms decorate the streets. While talking about flowers and tulips, you might consider booking a cruise which sails through Holland and visit the Keukenhoff Garden where you will find millions of tulips and flowers there. You might want to bring some tulip bulbs home and plant them in your garden. Spring river cruises offer a peaceful and serene atmosphere, ideal for those who want a relaxing getaway.

Summer

Summer is the most popular time for river cruises in Europe, and it’s easy to see why. The sun shines brightly, and the days are long, giving you plenty time to enjoy, exploring the cities and villages. The ship’s open-air decks become very busy while sailing, as guests can soak up the sun, sip refreshing drinks, and marvel at the breathtaking scenery. Bring some sun lotion with you if you plan to travel in the summer and always be prepared when going out exploring! Make sure you pack a hat or a cap and loose-fitting clothing. Always stay hydrated, the temperatures can reach up to 40°C , that is 104°F! This is also the season when you might experience cruise interruptions due to low water on the rivers. The water level can get so low that the ships cannot sail through certain segments on the river and you might have to change the ships or to continue your cruise by bus and stay in hotels. If you want to know more about the water levels and cruise interruptions, leave us a comment below. During summer, there are a lot of fun things to do, like biking along the riverbanks or visiting vineyards to taste delicious wines. While the temperature cools down in the evenings, the cities become very busy as they come alive with festivals and outdoor concerts, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.

Autumn

Autumn is a truly magical time to go on a river cruise. As the leaves change color, the European landscape transforms into a stunning display of reds, oranges, and yellows. The air becomes crisp and cool, and the riverbanks are decorated with vineyards ready for harvest. Cruising in autumn offers a unique opportunity to explore local wineries, experience the production of wine and taste the flavours of the season. There are a lot of chances to rain a lot in autumn so be well prepared, bring a rain jacket with you! There are chances that you might experience cruise interruptions due to high water level on the rivers, leave un a comment if you would like to find out more about it. The towns and villages have a cozy charm, with millions of fallen leaves on the streets. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the beauty of nature and indulge in delicious food and drinks.

Winter

Winter river cruises in Europe are like stepping into a fairy tale. As the temperatures drop, the rivers become calm and peaceful, creating a serene atmosphere. Inside the ship, you’ll find cozy interiors where you can stay warm and still enjoy the stunning winter scenery through panoramic windows. Many towns along the riverbanks host enchanting Christmas markets, where you can immerse yourself in the festive spirit with twinkling lights, warm mulled wine, and unique crafts. Welcome to your home away from home! Once you arrive onboard, it’s a good idea to take some time to unpack and get familiar with the ship facilities. Feel free to ask questions to the crew about anything you need assistance with. They are there to help you and are happy to do so. Take the opportunity to learn about all the areas of the ship, as it will be your home for the entire trip.

The crew onboard is eager to get to know you and create a bond with you. From the first day, they will make an effort to learn your name, preferences, and take care of all your needs. The crew is the most important asset of the cruise line, and they are the heart and soul of the ship. They work tirelessly to create an amazing experience for you. From the Captain and Hotel Manager to the person washing the dishes, they all play a vital role in creating lasting memories for you. They spend more time onboard than with their own families, so you become their family once you are onboard. Even if they don’t have the answer to your question, they will guide you to the right person who can assist you.

Onboard meetings and briefings are important to attend, especially on the first day. These meetings, such as ship and excursion briefings, provide valuable information about the logistics and what to expect during your cruise. It’s a chance to understand more about the upcoming days and weeks. These briefings are usually not recorded, so it’s essential to attend them.

On the first day, it’s a good idea to check the excursion options available throughout your cruise. Some excursions have limited space and require advance booking. If you prefer to explore on your own, there are plenty of choices, but it may require more planning and logistics. You can always reach out to us for assistance in planning your independent activities.

Consider the drink package options offered onboard. If you enjoy trying different spirits or local wines, a drink package might be a good option for you. Alternatively, you may be able to bring your own drinks onboard, but it’s always best to double-check with the onboard management before doing so.

When it comes to excursions, some are included in your package, while others may require advance booking. Keep in mind that some excursions start early in the morning, and if you plan to do multiple excursions in a day, it’s important to plan your day wisely to allow for some free time in between. River cruises can be busy, so it’s important to find a balance between excursions and relaxation time.

The food onboard the ship is simply amazing, with talented chefs preparing delicious meals for you. Some cruise companies also incorporate local dishes into their menus. There are typically different venues for dining, such as a main dining room, terrace, or lounge. If you have any dietary requests, inform the reception or restaurant manager as soon as you arrive onboard, even if you mentioned them during the booking process. This ensures that your preferences will be taken care of.

Remember, we are here to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have!

Enhance your river cruise experience with optional Beverage Packages, allowing you to indulge in unlimited or discounted drinks throughout your voyage. These packages are designed to provide convenience and value for guests who enjoy a variety of beverages. Here are some key points to consider:

Additionally, you may find exclusive discounts on special wines or champagne as part of the package.

The cost of the package can vary depending on the cruise line and duration of the voyage. To determine if it’s a good deal for you, take a look at the bar menu and estimate how many drinks you might consume per day and their individual costs.
