Staterooms on a River Cruise Ship

Choosing the perfect stateroom category for your river cruise can feel like a big decision. Different cruise companies offer various options to cater to your preferences and needs. While regular staterooms on river cruise ships may appear small, they are surprisingly practical. Every inch is thoughtfully designed to provide you with the space you need in a comfortable manner.

River cruise ships typically have three decks where guest staterooms are located.

On the First or Lower Deck, you’ll find Staterooms with small windows. These windows cannot be opened as they are just above the water level, and the cabin is partially submerged. These Staterooms are usually the most affordable option while still offering great comfort.

The Second or Middle Deck features staterooms with either Balcony or a French veranda/window. The balcony is equipped with a small table and two chairs, allowing you to enjoy the scenic views outside your stateroom. The French veranda on the other hand, has a large window which can be opened on one side, allowing fresh air to flow in while you relax on the bed with the curtains open. As the ships dock quite close to the shore, it’s important to lock your balcony doors and close the curtains in the evenings for privacy.

The third or upper deck may also have staterooms with French Veranda/Window or Regular Balconies, and this is where you’ll often find Suite Staterooms. Suites can vary in offerings, ranging from two-room suites with a living room and bedroom to Owner Suites located at the back of the ship. These suites and staterooms on the third deck are the most luxurious and spacious, offering enhanced accommodations and interior design.

Regardless of your choice, you can expect comfort and accommodation on a river cruise ship. Take a look at the different category types offered by the cruise company and select the one that best suits your needs and expectations.

While modern ships have made significant improvements in design and technology, you may still experience vibrations caused by the engine. This can depend on the sailing area and weather conditions. Consider bringing a pair of earplugs to cancel out any extra noise.

It’s worth noting that guests typically don’t spend much time in their rooms, regardless of the category chosen. Most feedback from our guests indicates that they primarily use their rooms for sleeping and showering, while the rest of their time is spent exploring cities or enjoying the ship’s facilities.

If you decide to book a room with a balcony, keep in mind the possibility of double docking with another ship. This is becoming more common in the river cruise industry as companies build more ships. In many European ports, it’s inevitable that you’ll dock alongside another ship, which may limit your access to the balcony. However, having a balcony while sailing allows you to relax and enjoy the scenic views or simply unwind in bed with the curtains open. Alternatively, you can always head to the sundeck for a full view.
